Medicine Hat’s downtown used book store is holding an event Monday to celebrate Family Literacy Day.
The Page and Whisker will be donating $2 from every purchase to the Medicine Hat Public Library and is hosting a children’s reading night.
“We wanted to support literacy initiatives in the community,” said store manager Dana Kerr. “I think promoting literacy is important because I think sometimes reading is a bit of a dying art.
“Literacy is really important and so is the library.”
The book readings are free to attend and run from 5-8 p.m. The store is bringing in different members of the community to read the stories.
“We’re starting off with Mayor Ted Clugston,” she said. “After that we have Nic and Shaun from My96. Then it’s Larry Godin who is being inducted into the Medicine Hat Sports Wall of Fame. After that we have local author Melanie Bayer.
“We have a police inspector, firefighters – it’s going to be a fun night with a lot of the community involved.”
The storytime events will take place at the back of the store and light snacks and fruit will be provided.
Kerr added that the store has a selection of children’s books and that kids are welcome at the shop at any time during business hours.
