Man struck by semi truck on TCH in hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries

jappel@medicinehatnews.com@MHNJeremyAppel A 44-year-old pedestrian has been hospitalized with serious but non-life threatening injuries after being struck by a semi truck on Boxing Day. At 10:56 p.m., a male who had been boosting his motor home that had broken down was struck by the truck on the westbound lane of the Trans-Canada Highway near Seventh Street SW. The 65-year-old male driver wasn’t injured, but the pedestrian was taken to Medicine Hat Regional Hospital by EMS. The incident remains under investigation, according to traffic Sgt. Gerald Sadlemyer. He said this entails a basic follow-up, checking in on the victim in the hospital and finishing up collision forms. The driver isn’t facing any charges, but that could potentially change as the investigation wraps up. Sadlemyer told the News this incident can serve as a cautionary tale for those driving on the highway at night. “You’re on highway speed, so you’ve got to judge distances. People come on you a lot quicker than they appear. Any time you’re going to help people, you’ve got to do it in safety,” he said. There are still details that have yet to be determined, Sadlemyer said. “This time of night, I’m not sure if any reflective equipment or clothing would have helped out to make sure the guy was seen. I’m not sure of the status of the vehicle, if they had their flashing lights so somebody would see them if they’re approaching at 80 kilometres an hour,” he said. 12-11
