Volunteers unload boxes of donations at the food bank on Wednesday. The annual CP Holiday Train event brought in 1,175 pounds of food.

Folks at the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank were delightfully surprised with the outcome of donations from the CP Holiday Train, which came through the city on Wednesday.

Krista Sanders, volunteer and events co-ordinator, says the food bank received 1,175 pounds of food from the event, filling four large cardboard boxes.

Not only is this a win for the food bank, but for other charity organizations in Medicine Hat as well, she said, as donations are shared throughout the city to organizations who need it.

“Community is everything,” said Sanders, adding how important it is that people support one another.

Sanders said volunteers began organizing the food at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Mike Heddema, general manager at Davis Dealership GMC Buick, and sales associate Levi Lennox were seen volunteering to quality check the food before it went onto the shelves, and

Sanders said Davis Dealership has been a major help throughout the year.

There were several volunteers at the food bank on Thursday, but Sanders says the non-for-profit organization can always use more helping hands.
