Grain marketing firm to build new elevator at Swift

By Medicine Hat News on December 13, 2019.

Grain marketing company G3 will build a new high-efficiency elevator at Swift Current in 2020, the successor to the Canadian Wheat Board announced on Thursday morning.

The facility, complete with loop-track loading scheme, would have a capacity of 42,000 tonnes and, pending final regulatory approval, would accept deliveries in 2021.

The Winnipeg-based firm that acquired most of the Wheat Board’s assets and logistics network, will also build a similar facility near Vermillion.

“G3 has been steadily growing to serve some of the most productive grain growing regions in Western Canada,” stated CEO Don Chapman in a release. “We’re happy to add Vermilion and Swift Current to our network and give farmers there a fast and efficient option for moving their grain to market.”

The company is currently building five new primary elevators in Alberta, including locations at Irricana, in Wheatland County, and and Carmangay, north of Lethbridge.

It also operates the Great Sandhills Terminal at Leader, which is acquired in 2014 from local producer group that still operates the shortline railroad that services it.

The announcement is the first major grain handling upgrade in southeast Alberta or southwest Saskatchewan in several years.
