MHC Brooks students to show off solar classroom concepts at Friday open house

Students at Medicine Hat College’s Brooks Campus will showcase their concepts for a solar classroom at an open house Friday. The outdoor space will incorporate solar power into the natural landscape, as conceived by students in the built environment engineering and technology, as well as the trades programs. Guests at the open house will have the opportunity to see these designs, which the students have been working on all semester, and provide feedback for their planning stage that will occur in the new year. The project is funded through a $100,000 grant from EBSCO Solar, which provides funds for libraries to install solar arrays on their roofs. The MHC Brooks Campus was the lone Canadian recipient of the grant, the purpose of which is to reduce electricity expenditures and promote renewable energy. “This project provides us an opportunity to showcase a creative and functional way to install solar panels,” said MHC director of teaching and learning Jason Openo. “To have students from our BEET and trades programs be part of designing and constructing the panels is a great way to provide our learners a chance to broaden their skills and showcase what they are learning in the classroom.” Friday’s event will take place from 1-3 p.m. 9-8
