The Medicine Hat Community View Lions celebrated a big milestone this weekend.

The organization gathered Saturday to celebrate 10 years in the community and to look forward to many more.

“Ten years is exciting for us,” said club president Daniel Tieman. “The Crescent Heights Lions Club ended up dwindling down to just a few members and around 2008 there was a movement to revitalize that group.

“The work of local lions clubs helped us revitalize that old club and create the Community View Lions.”

The new club pulled in three original members from the Crescent Heights club and now sits at 35 strong. The Community View Lions has donated $267,000 back into Medicine Hat and surrounding communities over the past decade.

“Our goal has been to be a major contributor to the community we live in,” Tieman said. “We’ve been a strong partner with local agencies over the years and we continue to keep doing good work.”

The Community View Lions have been involved with too many projects to list, but recently the club has been raising money for the Ronald McDonald House and will continue to donate funds to keep the house open.

The club is also involved in vision and hearing projects that help Third World countries, with boxes set up around Medicine Hat to make use of old glasses and hearing aides.

Tieman says the club is fairly unique because it has a number of young members who will carry on the torch after the older members retire.

“We call them our Lions Cubs,” he said. “We’re always getting their input on projects because one day they’ll be the ones in charge.”
