Families flocked to Medicine Hat College this weekend for the annual Science Olympics.

The event ran from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and offered a number of different science-based activities for kids to take part in.

“We do this every year to promote science in the community,” said PRAXIS senior scientific consultant Patty Rooks. “We have a bunch of tables set up with some really fun activities for the kids and today really is about having fun while learning.”

More than 100 kids took part in the Science Olympics, with third year education students from Medicine Hat College putting together the activities for them. College student Kenaniah Schnare says it was a great day all around.

“This is such a great way to have community involved,” he said. “From kids, all the way to their parents and grant parents, it’s fun to teach them and work with them on these experiments.”

Schnare says the Science Olympics offer important experience for teaching hopefuls.

“This is so valuable for us,” he said. “This is so much different from being in the classroom – interacting with these kids of all ages and abilities is just really cool.

“Things like this are so important for our learning and it’s something you may not get to take part in at a larger institution.”

Rooks says she is always happy to team up with MHC for the event.

“Working with the education students is amazing,” said Rooks. “We’re so thankful for this partnership and we really feel like everyone wins – kids get to learn, college students get to learn and parents are even learning when they’re out.

“Having the students doing classroom learning is really important and it’s something that is really hard to emulate outside of doing something like this.”
