One of two Medicine Hat News-Medicine Hat Tigers Scholarship recipients is staying in the Hat to pursue his postsecondary education – at least for now.

Carter Bray, a Crescent Heights High School graduate, is studying engineering at Medicine Hat College.

After this year, he hopes to transfer to the University of Alberta to get a bachelor’s degree chemical engineering.

“I’ve always been interested in subjects like math and science, and engineering is all based on math and science,” he said.

Bray was also influenced by his older brother, who’s an engineer.

This $2,500 scholarship goes toward a student who used to play in the Medicine Hat or Redcliff Minor Hockey or Ringette Associations.

Bray has extensive involvement in athletics under his belt – hockey, football, soccer and swimming.

“It was a good thing to get away from everything. You meet a lot of people as well doing sports. I just always like to be active,” he said, adding that it’s also a form of entertainment.

He started playing house league hockey as a kid, eventually moving on to Peewee AA.

“You build relationships and learn how to work with others, which is a big thing too. You also get that leadership aspect of working as a team,” said Bray.
