The Medicine Hat Public Library will hand out free memberships and renewals today from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Methanex has granted the library funds to hand out 500 free memberships and renewals – marketing co-ordinator Gillian Reimer says the event will be first-come, first-served.
“We just need people to show up – a driver’s licence makes the process even quicker,” she said. “It’s the first 500 people, in order and we’re just thankful for the sponsorship so we can do this.”
This is the first year the two organizations have paired up to give out the free cards and Reimer says they are hoping to give out all 500.
“We really want to put this sponsorship money to good use,” she said.
During the day the public library will also host a number of activities for families.
“We’re going to use this as a showcase as well,” said Reimer. “We’re going to be bringing out our virtual reality headset, these really great activity booklets for children we’ve put together, a scavenger hunt and lots of crafts.
“People don’t have to just show up, get their card and leave – they can stay for a while and have some fun.”
Reimer added that the public library will also be using the day to help out the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank.
“We’ve heard from some people that they’d like to renew their cards but they have fines,” she said. “We’ve been telling people they they can bring in food donations for the food bank and we’ll waive up to $20 of fines per person.
“Our rule of thumb with this will be, per one small item donated, we’ll waive one dollar of fines.”
