A man who attempted to flee an early Thursday morning traffic stop was arrested with assistance of the K9 Unit, according to police.

Members of Medicine Hat Police Service Patrol Team 4 pulled over a vehicle for a traffic infraction around 8:20 a.m. on Altawana Drive, when the male occupant of the vehicle attempted to flee on foot.

Daniel Fettig, 29, was wanted by police for outstanding warrants for breach of recognizance and Traffic Safety Act violations.

Members of the patrol unit were able to successfully contain the area, while Fettig was apprehended by the K9 unit soon after.

Staff Sgt. Rod Thompson told the News canines are deployed in a variety of different circumstances.

“There’s really no pattern that it follows,” explained Thompson. “Whenever our K9 Unit can provide support to us in locating people who flee from us, they certainly do, but they also provide assistance to our service with locating missing persons (for example), so there’s a wide array of areas where our K9 Unit can assist us.”

No injuries were sustained by any of the parties involved.

This wasn’t Fettig’s first time breaching the terms of his bail.

As per a News report, he was sentenced in October 2017 to 105 days in jail and one year probation after failing to report for probation and show up on time for a weekend sentence.

Upon apprehension, police found stolen debit, AMA and credit cards, and a knife he wasn’t supposed to have.
