Cancer Society and CIBC team up Sunday for annual Run for the Cure

By Medicine Hat News on October 3, 2019.

The 28th annual Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure takes place on Sunday at Echo Dale.

The opening ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. The five- and one-kilometre runs start at 10 a.m.

The CIBC Run for the Cure is the largest, single-day, volunteer-led event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research. It has raised more than $445 million over the years for the breast cancer cause.

Everyone is encouraged to participate: women, men, families, friends, survivors, researchers, doctors, colleagues, neighbours, students and volunteers.

Each year, the CIBC Run for the Cure unites Canadians who are a force-for-life in the face of breast cancer, said Andrea Seale, interim CEO, Canadian Cancer Society. With their support breast cancer research is funded and the largest cancer support system in the country acts as a voice for Canadians, advocating for important social change.

The research, as a result of funds raised, has helped determine how to prevent, diagnose, treat and survive breast cancer. This has helped reduce the mortality rate by 44 per cent since its peak in the mid-1980s.

Community connection and resilience, throughout the cancer journey, is supported through the cancer information service and peer match programs.

In spite of the huge strides in breast cancer, there are still more than 70 Canadians everyday who receive a breast cancer diagnosis, said Seale. We must keep investing in the breast cancer cause so that more and more people can continue to survive their diagnoses and enjoy a better quality of life.
