A bit of Medicine Hat was on display this weekend during the annual Culture Days celebration.

While some events were cancelled due to weather, the Hat Art Club and the Fibre Arts Society held open houses at the Cultural Centre. The events allowed the groups to interact with potential new members and to sell goods made by members.

“Fibre arts is a part of our culture,” said outgoing president Sharon Regehr. “This is something all of us in the club enjoy, so we want to keep it alive and going strong.

“We use events like this to encourage new people of all ages to join the club, learn a craft and carry on with it when we’re no longer able to do it.

“We just want people to see what we do.”

The Hat Art Club has been running in the city since the 1960s, has a number of members of all skill levels and brings in speakers throughout the year to help local artists hone their skills.

“Clubs like the Hat Art Club are important for developing culture in the city,” said club board member Bev Merrifield. “This is a great entry point for people who may be interested in taking art and maybe just haven’t had the opportunity to.

“We have plenty of experienced members in our club and we always have this event on Culture Days to spread the word a bit about what we do.”

The Esplanade was once again a main focus of Culture Days, hosting events Friday in its gallery, an Art Walk and then more events Saturday to wrap up the weekend.

The Miywasin Centre was scheduled to host a demonstration powwow at the Saamis Tepee Saturday, but cancelled the event because of the weather forecasts.
