Police Point Park is hosting an event Sunday evening to celebrate World Rivers Day and to officially open a trail that was closed for more than two-and-a-half years.

Park Interpreter Marty Drut says he is not sure if World Rivers Day has ever been celebrated in the city, but Police Point Park is excited to host the Sunset and Marshmallows event at 7 p.m.

“Corlaine Gardner is going to be leading the program and we’re asking people to meet at the Nature Centre,” he said. “We’re going to have a nice walk along the river and that will be followed up by a campfire – there might event be marshmallows, who knows?”

World Rivers Day started in 2005 and is held internationally on the fourth Sunday of September every year. Drut says park staff decided it was a good time to officially reopen the West Access Trail.

“This trail connects Police Point to the west – over to the Maple Avenue bridge and to downtown,” he said. “It was closed for a while for sewer upgrades and some other projects, but it’s open now and we know that’s good news for a lot of people.

“This is a major connector in the area and it’s a great trail for people who want to avoid hills.”

The trail reopened about a month ago but the park hasn’t yet held an official event. Drut says it is great to have it back.

“We’re ecstatic about it,” he said. “I’ve personally used this trail quite often and I’m ready to have it open again.”

The Sunday event is free and open to everyone.
