Highway signs approved for SE Alberta that read ‘HALO Country’

By Medicine Hat News on September 20, 2019.

Highway signs in the region will welcome motorists to “HALO Country” as well as Cypress County.

County councillors approved that the message, supporting regional emergency helicopter service, be added to signs to county markers at the expense of the society which operates the service.

Eight locations on Highway Nos. 1 and 3 will eventually advertise that the organization offers regional rescue services.

HALO organizers have often tried to draw attention to the distinction between it and STARS air ambulance, which receives base funding from the province to operate at bases in Alberta outside of Medicine Hat and Fort McMurray.

HALO is reimbursed per trip when it responds to emergencies or transports people for medical treatment.

This fall they announced that they are in need of significant funds and are asking municipalities to support lobbying to the province for ongoing funding.
