Courthouse evacuated when suspicious package found

Firefighters were called to the Medicine Hat courthouse Thursday, Sept. 19, 2019 after a suspicious package was found. The building was evacuated and police are investigating.

UPDATE from MHPS on Friday morning:

The Medicine Hat Police Service continues to investigate an incident that took place at the courthouse September 19, 2019, which resulted in a precautionary evacuation of the premises.

The investigation has not revealed any suspicious activity, packages or substances. One person was taken to hospital as a precaution, however it appears that symptoms were likely due to an unrelated medical issue. One exhibit was collected at scene and preliminary examinations indicate nothing out of the ordinary. The MHPS expects to conclude the investigation shortly.

Emergency vehicles were dispatched to the local courthouse Thursday afternoon after a suspicious package was found in its vicinity.

At 1:06 p.m., the Medicine Hat Police Service issued a news release informing the public that employees and members of the public were evacuated as a precautionary measure and urging people to avoid the courthouse while an investigation was underway.

According to the cops, the Medicine Hat Fire Service Haz-Mat Team, MHPS Major Crimes Unit and patrol members were on scene.

The investigation is in its “beginning stages,” so there’s little information available to the public.

“More information will be more forthcoming as details become known,” the release concluded.

As of press time, police haven’t release any further information.
