Local library screening film on effects of privatizing public schools

By Medicine Hat News on August 27, 2019.

Support our Students Alberta is hosting a screening of the documentary Backpack Full of Cash at the Medicine Hat Public Library on Sept. 9.

The 2016 film, narrated by Matt Damon, “explores the growing privatization of public schools and the resulting impact on America’s most vulnerable children,” according to a synopsis on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie review aggregator.

It takes viewers through the “tumultuous 2013-14 school year” in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Nashville and other cities, “exposing the world of education ‘reform.'”

Stephan Boissonneault of Edmonton’s Vue Weekly said the film “holds back no punches.”

The free screening begins at 7 p.m.
