Hatters looking to clean up the city’s shoreline will have an opportunity to do so Aug. 24. The City of Medicine Hat is teaming up with the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup to pick up litter along the South Saskatchewan River at Strathcona Island Park beginning at 10 a.m. Volunteers will meet at the South Cook Hut on the south bend of the river. The event will be wrapped up by noon, followed by snacks for participants. “The South Saskatchewan River provides us with water, recreation, habitat for wildlife and is a beautiful and scenic river that flows through Medicine Hat,” says Jass Baidwan, Environmental Sustainability Officer with the city’s HATSmart program. “We hope that by tackling a small stretch of shoreline within the city, we will raise awareness that litter, and especially plastic litter, does not belong on the shoreline or in the water. Please take it with you and dispose of it properly.” Baidwan says the event is a “great opportunity to show some community spirit and environmental stewardship of the river and shoreline that runs through Medicine Hat,” describing the cleanup as “fun” and “informal.” Participants are asked to dress appropriately and to please bring their own water, preferably in a reusable container. Those looking to register should search “Medicine Hat Riverbank Cleanup” on Eventbrite. 10
