The Medicine Hat Rock and Lapidary Club held a shop and tailgate sale as well as an open house Saturday afternoon to get more Hatters involved with the group.

The club is celebrating 30 years in the community and member John Cherwonogrodzky says it is always looking for new people.

“I love this club because it’s so diverse,” he said. “Some people specialize in fossils and others in gems – others are into wire wrapping and other jewellery projects like rings and pendants.

“This is a really beautiful world we live in and there’s so much to be learned out there.”

Cherwonogrodzky says the group has about 60 members, some of which are much more active than others, and that they meet on the first Tuesday of every month from September to June.

“Sometimes people want to join but are scared or intimidated because they don’t know anything about this stuff – that’s exactly what we want,” he said. “This is a great club to learn at and everyone here is willing to help someone who is new at this.”

The club is one of six of its kind in Alberta and it is a great way to feel young again, says Cherwonogrodzky.

“When we’re kids we’re stuffing our pockets with rocks,” he said. “When we get a little older we start to get too busy with life and all of life’s stresses – the club brings people back around to that love of rocks.

“If anyone is interested I would say to just show up at a meeting and tell us you’re interested in joining.”
