After Lily Scoville’s classmate had an asthma attack, she felt like she needed to do something to help out.

Scoville, 10, decided she would raise money for the Alberta Children’s Hospital and that she would run one lap around a baseball diamond for every $10 she raised.

It’s a good thing she likes running – because Scoville ended up raising $465 – meaning 46.5 laps around the ball diamond.

“I did a Run for Health because my schoolmate had an asthma attack and I wanted to help with that,” she said. “I know he forgot his inhaler at home and I just wanted to help – I’ve seen a lot of people do runs and I’ve seen people holding signs and asking for money so I wanted to try that.”

Scoville says the laps around the diamond were exhausting, but added she is thankful for all of the support.

“I was really tired,” she said. “I’m glad I had all of my friends – even my dog ran with us.”

Scoville spread the laps over multiple days and still has a few left to do.

With this year’s run being so successful, Scoville says she will be doing another one next year – possibly to help people in need of a bit of financial support.

“She thought of all of this herself,” said Justine Mann, Scoville’s mom. “Before she even came to me she had this idea and had started to figure it out – she did the posters on her own and hung them around the neighbourhood.”
