There’s only one proper way to kick off Medicine Hat’s Exhibition and Stampede Festivities – the annual Stampede Summer Jam.

The event started seven years ago with local duo Mahoney being the driving force behind the evening of fun.

“We started this seven years ago as a way to showcase all the great local talent we have here in Medicine Hat,” said Mahoney’s Trent Roset. “We get all of these musicians together for one big night and we want them to be playing together and collaborating.

“It’s an event that everyone really loved when we first did it and we’re still going this many years later.”

The concert is running tonight with the opener taking the stage at the Stampede Grounds at 6:30 p.m. The evening will feature Mahoney, Sons of Carol, Phoenix, The Hightops, Hot in Highschool and the Nitty Gritty Dirk Band. The Mahoney segment will feature Chelsea Sigglekow, Rob Cook, Chris Streiifel, Katie Smith, Tyler Casat and Justine Sletten.

Roset says the event has continued to grow every year – something that he has enjoyed watching.

“We’re hoping 2,000 people come out to this one – we started around 1,000,” he said. “We’ve got an announcer built into the show now and a special feature – it’s the first big show of the Stampede and it’s a great way to kick things off.”

Bands playing Monday evening will be performing cover songs that the whole crowd will know.

“It’s nice for everyone to be able to sing along,” said Roset. “We want to see people singing and dancing to all of these great songs that they know and recognize.”

Roset says it is important to showcase local talent every year.

“Part of this is showing the bands we having playing every weekend here in the city that people may not know about,” he said. “These are local people with jobs, families and they perform on the weekends – it’s an awesome night with so many awesome people.”

Tickets are available at the door for $10 and it is rush seating.
