Charge laid, name released in highway hit-and-run

A Medicine Hat man has been officially charged in relation to the July 8 hit-and-run on the Trans-Canada Highway that sent a cyclist to hospital in life-threatening condition.

Daniel Leger, 34, of Medicine Hat is charged with failing to stop after an accident which resulted in bodily harm.

The charge carries a potential fine of up to $1,000 or 14 years imprisonment or both. Leger has been released and is to appear in court in Medicine Hat on Aug. 7.

The suspected vehicle, a 2005 Black GMC Sierra pickup, has been seized.

The victim of the hit-and-run remains in life-threatening condition in a Calgary hospital.

The westbound male cyclist was hit by a vehicle around 9 p.m. on July 8 just east of Medicine Hat. He was left at the side of the road until a motorist found him and called the police.
