The owner of Western Canada’s largest solar panel array plans to expand the facility near Brooks by nearly 200 per cent, according to an announcement Thursday by provincial regulators.

Elemental Energy, which commissioned the 15-megawatt generating facility beside the Trans-Canada Highway in 2017, has applied to build future phases on two adjoining quarter sections.

That would bring an additional 26.5 megawatts of peak generating capacity online from photo voltaic panels over 88 hectares (about 225 acres).

That would essentially triple the size of the operation that sells power via an undisclosed private-sector contract on to the Alberta grid.

Proposed new phases would be built in two blocks, one to the north of the existing facility and one to the east. It would be joined to the grid through a proposed connection to a Fortis power line in the area.

The Alberta Utility Commission announced on Thursday that it will accept written submissions from the public regarding the project project until July 26.
