The local chamber of commerce has been honoured as the best in class in the province.

The announcement was made at the Alberta Chambers of Commerce annual general meeting and policy session in Camrose on the weekend.

The Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce received the 2018 Chamber of the Year Award among the network of business lobby groups with the largest membership.

“(It) represents our ability to thrive and grow as a Chamber and as a community, because of our ability to adapt and become stronger through the adversity and challenges we have faced,” said local chamber president Sarah MacKenzie in a statement.

Medicine Hat is considered in the largest category, those with memberships greater than 650, and nominations were evaluated by judges considering advocacy, membership, submission presentation and self-evaluation.

A citation states that the local Chamber proposed 31 policy positions that were either adopted or supported by municipal, provincial and federal governments.

The Chamber held 30 events in 2018, including meetings, business mixers, policy sessions and trade shows.

“We continue with passion and purpose for the community we serve, honouring the principles of our founding members, while adapting to our changing society, pursuing our mission while staying relevant to our members’ stated Executive Director, Lisa Kowalchuk.

The 2018 honour marks the fifth time since 2000 that Medicine Hat has claimed the award.
