Guilty pleas for man accused in restaurant robbery

By Medicine Hat News on May 10, 2019.

One of three men accused of robbing the Spice Hut Indian Cuisine restaurant in October 2018 has pled guilty to two of three charges he faces.

Michael Mingo entered guilty pleas at provincial court Thursday to robbery and wearing a disguise, while an additional charge of possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes was withdrawn.

A pre-sentence report has been ordered for his next court appearance on Aug. 2.

On the morning of Oct. 5, 2018, two men wearing masks entered the restaurant within the Travelodge Hotel, producing a pellet gun and demanding cash from a staff member before fleeing into an awaiting vehicle.

Within hours of the incident, the MHPS arrested Mingo, who was in possession of stolen cash and the gun.

Police initially arrested Mingo on some outstanding warrants, but they received a tip he may have been involved in the restaurant robbery, which they determined to be accurate.

Through further investigation, police executed two search warrants on two Medicine Hat residences, arrested the other alleged robber – Jayson Arndt – and the alleged driver – Kristopher Hansen.
