Women’s shelter hosting an evening of local photography

The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society is hosting an art open house at its outreach services office tonight, featuring the work of local photographer Elaine Freedman. The event, which begins at 7 p.m., is intended “to celebrate the diversity and strength of women in our community and beyond,” according to a news release from the MHWSS. Freedman has donated collections of Elaine’s photography for permanent display at the office, including her “A Moment: Portraits of Women” collection that was recently exhibited at the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre from March to May. “The theme of this exhibition is diversity and empowerment of women. I am so pleased to have this exhibition on permanent display at the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Outreach office,” said Freedman. Natasha Carvalho, MHWSS executive director, says the outreach centre is crucial for the work the society does. “It’s through outreach that we provide continued support to clients after they’ve left the shelter and are rebuilding their lives in the community,” said Carvalho. “It’s also a resource for those who don’t need or want to go into shelter, but still can benefit from connecting with us – such as friends and families of victims who want to learn how to better support a loved one.” The open house is part of a series of events for annual Raising the Curtain celebrations. Refreshments will be served and there will be door prizes, including a piece of framed artwork by Freedman. 10-9
