Toddler suffered ‘serious spinal injury’ in crash last week, DUI charges laid

@MHNJeremyAppel Police say a two-year-old boy who was in a vehicle struck by a drunk driver in a head-on collision last week has suffered a “serious spinal injury,” after originally reporting he wasn’t hurt. Emergency services responded to the accident involving a 2013 Dodge Ram pickup and 2013 Honda Odyssey on Hill Road S.E. on Jan. 25 at 6:42 p.m., where they determined that the driver of the Ram had crossed the centre line and struck the oncoming Odyssey — which was occupied by a mother and her son — and that the accident was a result of intoxication. It was initially reported that only the mother was injured, but after the child was assessed by medical staff at the hospital, they determined he was suffering from a significant injury. He was transported to Alberta Children’s Hospital for treatment. Regan Glauser, 38, of Medicine Hat was arrested at the scene for impaired driving and dangerous driving, and later refused to comply with a demand for a breath sample. The Medicine Hat Police Service Traffic Unit charged him on Jan. 28 with two counts of impaired operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm, two counts of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm and one count of refusal to comply with a breath demand after being involved in an accident that resulted in bodily harm. Glauser has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Medicine Hat Provincial Court on Feb. 19. MHPS continues the investigation into this serious collision and is asking any witnesses to contact the Traffic Unit at 403-529-8471, if they have not yet spoken to police. 10
