It was almost as if a group of expectant mothers — very expectant mothers — were lined up at the starting gate of a race in the halls of the maternity ward at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

And the honour of crossing the finish line first was Trace Rae Ressler, newborn son of Krista and Carmen Ressler of Medicine Hat.

Southeastern Alberta’s first baby of 2019 was born at 3:24 a.m. and weighed eight pounds, 11 ounces. A maternity ward spokesperson said by the end of Jan. 1, at least five, and maybe six newborns were expected to arrive. The second baby of the year was born about four hours after the Resslers’ Trace.

“It’s been busy around here today, that’s for sure,” said the maternity ward employee.

Trace is the youngest of three Ressler boys. He joins older brothers Declan, 4, and Grayson, 2.

Krista Ressler’s baby was due Dec. 30 “so everybody (family and friends) were joking that I’d have the New Year’s baby,” she said. “It was a surprise for sure” that Trace won the race. “I tried to keep it out of my mind.”

Father Carmen, who is the secretary-treasurer of CAPE School in Medicine Hat, said the boys were in bed and he and Krista were just having a quiet evening at home when Krista told him around midnight “it was time to go to the hospital.”

About three hours later, Trace Rae arrived. “He was the quickest one” of the three Ressler births, said Krista.

The proud parents say that it’s likely that Trace will forever be the baby of the family.

Patrick Burles, Alberta Health Services representative for the South Zone, said there were no New Year’s babies born in Taber, Brooks or Cardston by mid-afternoon Tuesday and “at this point it doesn’t appear anything is imminent either.”

Becoming the parent of the first Medicine Hat baby is a real honor that has been achieved by Krista and Carmen Ressler. Both of these individuals are an excellent part of our community. I would like to congratulate them personally on the arrival of their third son. Well, I will write an essay on their lives with the help of an online writer that I will hire after reading reviews about him at https://writeessaysonline.com/is-edubirdie-legit-three-different-perspectives/ website because it shares the real and authentic reviews of the people with us.
