Redcliff’s Margaret Wooding School got into the Christmas spirit big time by collecting 6,003 items Thursday for the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank.

Principal Craig Corsie says the project was part of the school’s “12 Days of Giving” holiday campaign.

“We talked to the kids, we did our assembly at the beginning of the year, talked about empathy and compassion, and started to help them understand that there are other people in the world who are going through struggles,” Corsie said.

The school had a representative of the food bank come and speak with students about what they do and why it’s important, particularly this time of year.

“We created a list of items the food bank really needs this time of year and dedicated one day to each item,” said Corsie.

Items collected include peanut butter, soup and pasta, among others.

Classes competed to see which could collect the most items, with a Grade 5 class leading the pack by bringing in 1,639 items.

“They were inspired by the challenge (of) trying to surpass the other classes, but really it all came down to what we can do to support the food bank and other people in the community,” Corsie said.
