A road safety campaign to remind people about the important rules of the road has been launched by the City of Medicine Hat.
The program is being undertaken in conjunction with the Alberta Traffic Safety Coalition.
Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians all play a role in keeping everyone safe on roadways, a city news release says. “Understanding why the rules of the road are in place is key to practicing good habits that could prevent incidents,” said municipal engineer Randi Buchner. “We chose the campaign slogan ‘Safety is a shared responsibility’ to emphasize that whether you are driving, riding a bike or walking, knowing the basic safety rules can prevent fellow road users from being killed or seriously injured.”
To launch the year-long campaign, residents are invited to complete a short survey to test their knowledge of the rules. A link to the survey is on the city’s website, which asks people to test their knowledge.
It includes opportunities to provide suggestions where the city can encourage greater road safety awareness. The city says the survey will provide information to help develop areas of focus and monthly messages over the coming year.
“The hustle and bustle at this time of year can lead to serious accidents, which is why we decided to launch the campaign before the holidays,” said Buchner.”We want to remind people to slow down, obey the rules, and stay safe while shopping, attending events, visiting and travelling.”
The Alberta Traffic Safety Coalition includes the City and the Medicine Hat Police Service, Alberta Health Services, Alberta Motor Association, Brain Injury Relearning Services, MADD and RCMP.
The City’s Municipal Works department will work alongside members of the coalition to build awareness of road safety through surveys, contests, informational videos, and local and community events.
The survey will be active for one month, until Jan. 18. After completing the survey, participants will have a chance to win a city gift card as a thank you for their time. For more information and to complete the survey visit medicinehat.ca/roadsafety.
