Roughly 5,000 new brain injuries occur in Alberta each year.

Coping with a brain injury can be particularly difficult and Brain Injury Relearning Services is lighting up its annual “A Light to Remember” — a fundraiser and awareness campaign that provides opportunity to honour and acknowledge those impacted by brain injury. You can add a light or a string of lights to the illuminations on the BIRS/REDI Enterprises Allowance Avenue building.

The causes of brain injury include sustaining a massive blow to the head, being deprived of oxygen to the brain and having a stroke. The ramifications can include paralysis, weakness, balance issues, vision or hearing difficulties, struggling to find words to voice, memory and attention challenges and changes to emotions.

It is not only the person directly affected by the injury that is impacted, it affects the whole family.

A Light to Remember tells those affected by brain injury, and their loved ones, that they are not alone. There are many people that care.
