A waste management investment group that includes hockey hall of famer Paul Coffey has purchased Can Pak Environmental, the company which handles curbside recycling collection under contract for the City of Medicine Hat.

The acquisition was announced Wednesday morning by Environmental 360 Solutions, Inc., a Toronto-based company formed last month with the goal of acquiring firms that provide municipal, industrial, commercial and residential waste disposal.

Coffey is listed as a key investor, alongside investment group Almada, which includes managers with connection to one of Canada’s largest waste disposal companies.

The new company’s first purchase is Can Pak, a family-owned, Red Deer-based enterprise that this year began contracted pickup service in Medicine Hat and established local commercial pickup operations.

The company also operates in Red Deer, Calgary, Edmonton and some smaller communities in Alberta.

A statement from both companies suggests operations will not be affected, but also that the further expansion is planned.

“We have the operational expertise, commitment, and capitalization to build a significant player in the North American environmental waste management industry,” said Danny Ardellini, president of Environmental 360 Solutions Inc. “We will be pursuing other acquisitions and organic growth opportunities to grow our business and become the trusted environmental management leader.”

Brian Murphy, general manager of the city’s environmental utility department, told the News that the city has been previously informed of the transaction, and doesn’t expect any change in local service.

“The blue cart residential recycling program and collection schedules are not changing,” he said. “We look forward to working with our residential recycling service provider under the new banner.”

Ardellini founded National Waste Services, which grew to handle 400,000 customers in southern Ontario. Now known as Green For Life Environmental, GFL has 140 locations in Canada and Michigan, including three in southern Alberta.

Separate firm E360S, acquires Can Pak’s nearly 100 employees, 35 trucks and two recycling facilities that serve about 150,000 customers weekly.

The terms of the sale were not disclosed.

“My family and the team at Can Pak are thrilled to be joining E360S and look forward to helping build the company,” said Can Pak owner Mark Pedersen. “With the additional capital from E360S, we can realize our shared vision of providing safe, excellent customer service, while protecting the environment of the communities we serve.”

“(We) are incredibly bullish on this sector,” Coffey said in the release.
