Police are seeking public assistance after local dog owner pulled a metal pellet round from their pet.

The Medicine Hat Police Service suspects the Collie Shepherd cross was shot with a pellet gun between Nov. 7 and 10.

The dog’s owner noticed dried blood and a round wound on the animal’s shoulder during grooming on Nov. 10.

The shooting is believed to have occurred near the zero hundred block of Rossland Boulevard S.E.

In a news release, the MHPS pointed out that cruelty to animals is a criminal offence, punishable by up to five years imprisonment or a $10,000 fine.

MHPS S-Sgt. Trevor Humphreys says this type of random assault on a pet is “extremely rare.”

“It’s not something that, in my experience policing, I’ve ever had to investigate and never heard of in Medicine Hat,” Humphreys said.

Anyone with information regarding this crime is urged to contact MHPS at 403-529-8481 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
