It was a nightmare at Elm Street School on Wednesday.

Students dressed up, shared treats and watched movies in their classrooms, which held Halloween parties prior to a festive afternoon assembly.

Dylan Eremenko, a Grade 6 student dressed as Harry Potter, says his favourite aspect of Halloween is trick-or-treating, “when you can walk around getting treats from all the houses and see all the decorations your neighbourhood makes.”

He said he decided to dress as Harry Potter because he’s a fan of the movies.

Grade 5 student Autumn Robinson wore a classic cat costume as a tribute to her six pet cats she has at home.

She said her favourite thing about this time of year is seeing what her classmates dress up as.

“You can see all your friends dress up,” said Robinson.

Superhero costumes appeared to be the most popular choice.

Lucas Heniger, another Grade 5 student, dressed as Deadpool, “because I really like superheros and this is one of my favourites.”

He said he enjoyed the sequel that came out this year more than the original.

Thaddeus Heathcoat-Alexander, a Grade 3 student who donned an Iron Man costume, was quick to say the treats are his favourite feature of Halloween, “because the candy tastes good.”

He said his favourites are the cigarette candies, although he made sure to distinguish them from actual cigarettes.

“I like the taste, but I don’t like how they look. Cigarettes are very bad for you,” said Heathcoat-Alexander. “You can’t swallow in any of the air you see around you.”
