South Country Co-op gave away a pair of $4,000 travel vouchers to two lucky Hatters Thursday evening at Desert Blume Golf Club.

The event concluded the first ever Planes, Trains and South Country Co-op contest.

“The idea was to get people to visit more than just one of our sites,” said marketing and community relations manager Carmen Hudson. “We wanted people to get out to our ag sites, gas bars and so on.

“They had to pick up a passport and then go to the sites and get stamps saying they visited.”

Co-op received 5,000 entries into the contest, drew 50 semi-finalists, 10 finalists and then two of the 10 won the awards in dramatic fashion at Desert Blume — with all 10 opening a suitcase at the same time, two of which had the travel vouchers inside.

Depending on where people lived, they needed a different number of stamps — with Medicine Hatters required to have at least three.

“The vouchers are as good as cash,” she said.

Gloria Ferre and Reena Houghton were the big winners on the night.
