The Medicine Hat Police Service released surveillance footage Monday of two people vandalizing the local college’s rainbow crosswalk over the weekend.

Staff Sgt. Ryan Thorburn says the MHPS hopes the video helps the public identify the perpetrators.

“Hopefully over the next couple of nights we can figure out who’s responsible,” he said, adding that the police currently don’t have any suspects.

When they were deciding whether to release the video, some officers expressed concern that it could encourage vigilantism.

“We did discuss what the ramifications might be and even if somebody knew those persons in the video and took matters into their own hands,” said Thorburn. “We always consider those things, but it wasn’t something we were overly concerned about at this point.”

Anyone with information regarding the perpetrators’ identity should contact MHPS at 403-529-8481, or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS if they wish to remain anonymous.
