The CIBC Run for the Cure has become a staple in more than 50 communities across the country.

The event took place Sunday at Echo Dale and was the fourth annual event under the CIBC banner.

“The event is really about creating awareness around breast cancer and getting together for a morning of fun,” said run director Rita Pasiciel. “We’re hoping people have a great time and have a great walk.

“This is a really great event for people looking for support. I know there’s people walking that are dealing with a recent diagnosis — being able to talk to survivors is a very important asset.”

Organizers anticipate that roughly $37,000 would be raised at the event, with more than 300 walkers attending.

“It’s a really big event every year and it’s for a very good cause,” said Pasiciel. “Awareness is such a big thing when it comes to cancer — really getting the word out about getting regular checks has made a big difference.

“We really want people to go and get checked the second they think something may be wrong.”

The event kicked off with a number of speeches from government officials and cancer survivor Amber Kornelson, before stretching and starting off on the one or five kilometre courses.

Kornelson described her fight with cancer as the longest year of her life and ended he speech with — “I hate cancer.”
