Auditions are taking place for a new youth orchestra program being developed by the Symphonic Society of Medicine Hat.

The Symphonic Society was established in 1975, and there have been a number of different programs over the years but this youth orchestra is a brand new venture, says Cam Clark, president of the Symphonic Society of Medicine Hat.

Young people up to the age of 21 will be considered based on their skill level playing violin, cello, brass, woodwind and percussion instruments, says Clark.

It is ideal for those at a higher skill level who are looking for another challenge, opportunity, or those who have graduated but are looking to play in an orchestra, says Clark, adding there are advantages to performing with a group.

“Ensemble playing is one of those things that just provides that camaraderie and experience in a communal setting that you just can’t have in private lessons,” said Clark. “You get that shared experience of putting the music together and perform for an audience.”

An application should be completed along for a $15 fee for auditions. On acceptance a registration fee of $250 applies for a four-month program. Orchestra members will participate in a weekend symposium from which the foundation of the orchestra will be built. The Medicine Hat Youth Orchestra members can expect a musical challenge along with camaraderie, fun and friendship-building. They will perform a variety of styles and genres.
