Bart and Lisa Campbell are going to have some company next month on their trip out to Saskatchewan in their 1926 Chevy.

Fred and Teri Holt are good friends with the Campbells and will be making the multi-week trek out to Hague, Sask. alongside the Campbells Chevy in their own 1929 Ford Model A.

“I told him a few years back, if he made this trip happen, we’d be happy to go with him,” Fred said. “He’s been talking about this for three years so it’s great to see it coming to life.

“I’m an old-car guy and I have no problems driving them — I’m not afraid that we won’t be able to make it.”

Both couples will be parting for Hague after the September long weekend and will be leaving with no money, credit cards or debit cards.

“It’s going to be fun looking for work to get by,” said Fred. “Every time we have to stop, which will be pretty often, we’re going to have to make ends meet.”

The couples are trying to recreate what it would be like driving the distance during the Great Depression. The total journey will be more than 1,000 kilometres.

“I’ve added some framework to my car so I can carry quite a few things on top,” he said. “We’ve got a tent that we’ll be able to hang off of the framework to give us some shelter every night.”

Teri said she did not need to be convinced to take the journey with Fred.

“Not at all,” she said. “This is going to be like a glorious camping trip for us — we’re looking to create a memory that we can keep forever.”
