The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society is gearing up for one of its larger fundraisers of the year.

The 16th annual Scotiabank Group Charity Golf Classic is set for Sept. 6 at the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club, with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

Hatters are encouraged to sign up as a team or as a solo golfer, for $150 per person, which includes a lunch at noon before tee-off and dinner afterward.

“We’ve been doing this for 16 years now and it’s a great way to get people outside playing some golf and raising some money for the shelter’s programs,” shelter executive director Natasha Carvalho said. “It’s always a fun day on the greens for the people who golf, and we supply snacks and lunch — there’s also a dinner later on and a number of prizes that people will be going home with.”

There are a number of spots available for golfers to still register, and Carvalho says this fundraiser is not only a great time, but also quite important for the shelter.

“We usually bring in around $30,000 with this event,” she said. “When you raise that much money, obviously it’s a really big fundraiser for us.

“We use that money for a number of different things and a number of different programs — we really count on the golf tournament, so we’re really hoping it’ll be a success.”

Carvalho says while there aren’t currently any new initiatives to put the money toward, ongoing funding is essential for day-to-day operations.

“Right now we’re looking at keeping our programs and services running as best we can,” she said. “We’ve expanded some of these programs quite a bit over the past few years, and we just want to make sure they’re still be delivered at the highest quality possible.”

Anyone looking for more information can call the shelter at 403-527-8223.
