Residents of Riverside and along Parkview Close are asked to voluntarily reduce their water use next week as new water mains are installed.

Replacing the fixtures along Second Avenue from July 23-26 will mean less capacity, said Brian Murphy, general manager of environmental utilities.

Outdoor watering and washing vehicles could put added stress on the system, which has been undergoing repairs since May.

“Four days are required for work crews to install and connect new piping and components to replace existing, 100-year-old water system infrastructure,” said Murphy. “We are asking residents to avoid putting any extra pressure on the system during this time, to make sure water flows remain safe and comfortable.”

Additional work continues through August, though future restrictions should not be required, according to a release.

The overall completion date is in mid-September.

Trail closed

A portion of the Devonian Trail, near the downtown YMCA, will be closed for construction activities for about five weeks starting Monday.

A retaining wall, wider pathway and handrail will be installed at the narrow stretch between River Road and the bank of the South Saskatchewan River.

The work is part of parks and recreation’s trail maintenance program, and as a result, access on River Road between First Street and Ash Avenue will be closed through construction

A release states that secondary access to the YMCA parking lot is available via Second Street SE.
