Prelate, Sask., is among four dozen communities in that province that will see cellphone coverage upgrades by next spring, SaskTel has announced.

The town, located east of Leader, is one of 43 sites where the provincially owned phone company will install “small cell site solutions” to improve 4G coverage.

That work will be completed by March 31, 2019, according to a release from the Crown corporation on July 4. Another 57 locations will be announced when plans are finalized.

Four other locations are near the Alberta provincial boundary: at Maregno, near Alsask; Marsden, south of Lloydminster; Brock, near Kindersley; and, Denzil (near Unity).

Other locations in the southwest include Lucky Lake and Riverhurst (northeast of Saskatchewan Landing), and two in the Swift Current region at Waldeck and Morse.

The plan, first announced in late 2017, is to have 100 locations in operation by 2020 while other coverage gaps are studied.

Last year SaskTel spent $4.2 million to erect six high speed towers as part of an eventual plan to bring faster Internet service to 34 more locations.

Brooks byelection date

A byelection to fill a vacant city councillor position in Brooks will be held on Aug. 16, that city’s city clerk office states. A nomination day is set for Tuesday, July 17.
