The deadline for local businesses to show their competitive and Stampede spirit by participating in the annual store decorating contest is drawing close.

“I’m issuing a challenge to all businesses in Medicine Hat and surrounding area to join in this fun activity, and to remember your business along with the (Stampede) is the place to be, part of the fun and excitement,” said Darlene Keeler, chair of the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede’s store decorating contest committee, during a press conference Tuesday.

The application deadline for the annual store decorating competition is Friday, with judging to take place July 23.

Judging will be based on decoration, originality and employee participation, said Keeler.

Categories for the competition include institutions/community services, banks, retail stores, non-retail/offices, bars/restaurants/hotels/fast food, and a category for first-time entries.

Judges for this year’s competition will be Mayor Ted Clugston, Stampede royalty, the Stampede’s youth advisory committee and members of the store decorating committee.

The winners for each category will receive two Saturday rodeo tickets, two Saturday night show tickets, a commemorative plaque and a celebratory BBQ in August at pioneer village.
