Medicine Hat is the place to be this weekend for skateboarders.
Sunday marks the 10th annual Beat the Heat skate event, which will give more than 100 skaters from around the country a place to show off their tricks.
“We get people from both coasts coming out,” said Medicine Hat Skateboard Association member Davie James. “There’s going to be a bunch of guys coming out that are local, and a lot from around Alberta — it’s a good mix.”
James says the Canada Day event is southern Alberta’s largest annual skateboard competition.
“We know there’s a lot of people around the country who are looking forward to this every year,” he said. “We’re celebrating our 10th anniversary this year, which is exciting, but we’re more just looking forward to having an awesome Sunday.
“How many people we get out each year varies but we expect triple digits.”
James says organizers are making some tweaks to the usual event format.
“We thought this year we would mix it up a bit,” he said. “Instead of doing an open competition and a product competition, we’re going to do something called the Carnival of Carnage instead of the product competition.
“We want to celebrate a bit more and if it that carny feel. So we’re going to be doing five different mini events, and that’ll be things like the keg hop that we did last year or something like an ’80s grab trick.”
James says the skaters always have a blast during Beat the Heat.
“There’s a sense of community for sure,” he said. “We’re going to be giving away a lot of cash that day in prizes, which is thanks a lot to our sponsors.
“There’s a lot of skaters around Canada that know Canada Day as Beat the Heat Day, and we’re really looking forward to Sunday.”
