A man high on drugs whose image was posted to social media with warnings that he was going through people’s backyards in Redcliff was sentenced to 90 days jailtime.

Gerald Thurber pled guilty Thursday at the Medicine Hat Provincial Court to being unlawfully in a dwelling house, after the incidents that stemmed back to June 8.

According to the agreed statement of facts, on that day locals began posting to social media images of an unknown man allegedly going through people’s backyards in Redcliff.

Soon after, RCMP responded to a break and enter at a local address. Witnesses confirmed the suspect matched the pictures of the man that had been posted to social media earlier. They informed the police he had slurred speech and was disoriented.

Police located the man nearby, and placed him under arrest.

Those in the residence said that keys and hunting knife had been taken — but only the keys were recovered.

Defence counsel said the accused was “high on a substance and had no memory of the incident.”

The judge denied the accused’s request to serve the 90 days on weekends.

Due to time spent in custody, Gerald Thurber has 69 days left to serve of his sentence.
