Drug trafficking and fraud pushed by a drug addiction will send a Medicine Hat man to jail for two years.

Morgan Ansil Williams entered guilty pleas to multiple charges Thursday at the Medicine Hat Provincial Court, with defence counsel saying the accused had “unfortunately gotten involved with the drug scene and drug culture,” which led to crime to support his habit.

The 25-year-old’s record began in 2007.

Two years were handed down to the charge of trafficking methamphetamine, after Williams was arrested for selling 3.7 grams of meth for $170 to undercover officers, who were investigating “dial-a-dope” drug trafficking schemes.

Williams will concurrently serving time for various fraud-related charges.

In one incident he pled guilty to, he unsuccessfully attempted to cash a cheque at a local payday loan business. Staff refused, and the cheque turned out to have been one of many stolen from a vehicle when it had been in a dealership.

The accused is one of several involved in a fraud perpetrated against the local H&R Block. In this case, Williams brought in a T4 slip from a business that had not been in effect for numerous years, and had his taxes done — taking advantage of H&R Block’s instant rebate program. With this fraudulent T4, he came away with $4,559.36. Police were contacted by the business after they became suspicious of this and other similar T4s people were attempting to submit.
