Medicine Hat News The handout of 23,000 blue carts for recycling pickup is complete, the city’s solid waste utility announced Wednesday. Distribution began May 8 in a process administrators said could have lasted until the end of June, as contracted pickup service ramped up. “We are seeing a lot of enthusiasm and receiving positive feedback about the blue recycling carts and the convenience of residential recycling,” stated Brian Murphy, general manager of the environmental utilities department. “We’d like to thank everyone for the warm welcome they’ve given their blue carts — sometimes even naming them and posting videos or photos.” The service involves all single-family homes and multiple-unit housing with grey bin general trash pickup. The bins are to be operated in the same manner as grey and green yard waste bins, and will be collected the same day. A new charge of $6.31 for an average month will go into effect for billing periods that include July 1, though other related charges will drop, leading to an overall increase of $2.89. If residents have not yet received a cart, they should contact the environmental utilities department’s customer service line at 403-529-8176. Residents should also have received a booklet outlining the service, and the department is also stressing such information can be found on the city’s website. Cardboard, plastics, tin and aluminum, mixed paper and newsprint can be deposited unsorted and unbound in the blue recycling cart. Glass, which can break and spoil loads of other material, is only accepted at main recycling drop off depots that will remain in operation to handle overflow from houses, apartments and condos that use private or city commercial pickup of trash. CanPak environmental also states bins do not have to be put out for collection if they are not full. 12
