A Winnipeg man facing charges over two bank robberies in Medicine Hat will be heading to trial by way of a Court of Queen’s Bench judge and jury.

The elections were made by 54-year-old Stephen Vogelsang during a court appearance Thursday, with an adjournment then made to June 21 so a preliminary hearing date can be set.

Vogelsang was arrested and charged in Medicine Hat in October 2017 after two local banks were robbed. After his arrest, police agencies in Saskatchewan announced charges for two bank robberies in Regina, and one in Saskatoon.

He secured bail in Medicine Hat but was then transferred to Regina where his bail was denied, and he has remained in custody there.

Delays have occurred on the Medicine Hat charges due to challenges from having charges in two provinces — such as requirements to go through each province’s legal aid.

Defence lawyer Greg White has acting as Vogelsang’s agent, despite not being fully retained, to assist with the proceedings and moving them along.

The case made national news as Vogelsang is better known for his former job as a news director at CTV Winnipeg, and then becoming a journalism instructor at Red River College in Winnipeg from 2002-2011.
