The Medicine Hat Public Library will be offering Hatters a chance to grab some cheap books today and Saturday during the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale.

The event takes place today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and runs based on suggested prices for books which will all be donated to the public library.

“It’s always a really exciting weekend for us at the library,” said head of marketing services Gillian Reimer. “We’ve got a ton of books to sell, both fiction and non-fiction, and we have a bunch of children’s books as well.

“There’s books, movies, music, magazines — we have so much good stuff for people to check out.”

Reimer says the public library gets donations throughout the year, and then flips the books during Spectrum weekend to help fund its initiatives.

“We’re extremely grateful for everyone who donates books to us throughout the year,” said Reimer. “We also weed through our collection and put some books up for sale that may be outdated, not in great condition or have seen their fair share of checkouts.

“There’s a really good variety of books, so pretty much anyone who likes reading would like this sale.”

The public library holds the event every year, with a different goal for each year’s fundraising. This year it will go toward expanding, says Reimer.

“We’re fundraising to expand our programs and services,” she said. “We’re looking at providing services off-site, but not necessarily in a brick-and-mortar building.

“We do want to expand beyond our four walls, and that’s where the money will go this year.”
