Hatters are encouraged to bring old and expired prescriptions to London Drugs this Saturday, as the business and Medicine Hat Police Service join forces to host their annual prescription drug round-up.
“It’s important to note that you can bring your old and expired prescriptions to the drug store at any time, it’s not just on this day,” said Staff Sgt. Mike Fischer with the MHPS. The round-up is slated to run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at London Drugs location on 13th Avenue S.E., on Saturday.
Disposing of old and expired medication properly is important for multiple reasons.
“One, we want to keep it out of the landfill, the sewer systems,” said Fischer. “We don’t want people to flush them down the toilets, down the sink, or throw them in the garbage.”
As well, it’s to prevent children from having access to the drugs which then could be accidentally or purposely ingested.
“Use your medication, use it properly, and when you’re done with it dispose of it properly,” said Fischer.
Alongside the drugs being disposed of properly by London Drugs, the drop-off procedure includes striking names out so people’s identities are properly concealed, while the plastic bottles are recycled.
Through this program, two five-gallon pails of medication were collected in 2017, said Fischer, and four five-gallon pails were collected in 2016.
“When you look at it, that’s a lot of pills —and that’s just the people who return it on that certain date.”
