First-degree murder case adjourned one week

By Medicine Hat News on May 10, 2018.

The Medicine Hat man charged with first-degree murder in the death of 64-year-old James Satre made a brief appearance in court on Thursday.

Counsel for Robert S. Hoefman was granted an adjournment to May 17, as they go through a large amount of disclosure and discuss with Crown to decide how many days will be needed for a preliminary inquiry.

The 56-year-old was originally arrested Nov. 9 on a single count of extortion. The first-degree murder charge was laid in January.

Satre’s body was found on the morning of Oct. 11 in the alleyway by his home by the intersection of Mill Street and Smelter Avenue.

Police said Satre appeared to be a “victim of circumstance and location,” and has no apparent connection to the extortion victim or the accused.
